CEBU City – Power demand in Metro Cebu decreased by 3.1 megawatts (MW) during the Earth Hour from 8:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. on Saturday, a utility official said.
The demand drop during this year’s Earth Hour was higher than last year’s 2.8 MW, Visayan Electric Company (Veco) reputation enhancement manager Quennie Sanchez Bronce said in a statement.
Earth Hour is a global initiative to increase people’s awareness on climate change.
Metro Cebu recorded the highest demand drop in electricity during Earth Hour in 2015 at 4.6 MW.
Veco serves the cities of Cebu, Mandaue, Talisay, and Naga and the municipalities of Liloan, Consolacion, Minglanilla, and San Fernando.
Earth Hour in this city, spearheaded by the city government, was held at the Plaza Independencia near the waterfront.
It started with a play from Pagtambayayong Foundation, with University of San Carlos volunteers stressing the need to use renewable energy and stop using coal-fired power plants.
The lights were switched off at exactly 8:30 p.m. A fire dance presentation followed.
When the lights were switched on, at least 3,000 bikers rolled off a 6-kilometer route that took them from Plaza Independencia to barangays T. Padilla, Tejero and Carreta. (PNA)
