Mid-February completion of Ungka road widening eyed

ILOILO City – Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) secretary Manuel Bonoan and DPWH Region 6 committed to finish by the middle of February 2023 the widening of the road beneath the Ungka flyover from Barangay Ungka, Jaro district to Barangay Ungka II, Pavia, Iloilo.

“We are working round the clock para matuman ang aton commitment to establish two lanes of service road on both sides of the flyover,” said DPWH assistant regional director Jose Al Fruto.

The road widening project contractor is International Builders Corporation (IBC).

A lane of road is being added on both sides of the road beneath the Ungka flyover as an immediate solution to the traffic congestion in the area while the defective flyover remains closed for repairs.

Fruto said negotiation is ongoing with more or less 20 lot owners affected by the road widening.

“We are really thankful sa aton mga pumoluyo. They are very cooperative,” he said.

The road widening started two months ago.

Fruto appealed for longer public patience.

“Bal-an naton may huol gid sa traveling public… and most particularly ang aton landowners kay may structures kita nga maapektohan. Nagapangayo gid kita sang pasensya kag pagkonsiderar,” he said.

Secretary Bonoan was here on Jan. 13 to inspect the “sinking” P680-million Ungka flyover.

He noted small movements (millimeter) on piers 4, 5 and 6 during a controlled traffic loading test./PN
