KALIBO, Aklan – More and more airline companies are offering domestic and international flights to the Kalibo International Airport (KIA).

Currently, KIA has 12 domestic flights to Manila and Cebu and 28 international flights to South Korea, Taiwan, mainland China, Singapore, Hong Kong, and Malaysia.

The airport continues to attract airlines and travelers since the reopening of Boracay Island in October.

KIA manager Engineer Eusebio Monserate Jr. said two additional international direct flights from mainland China to Kalibo and vice versa started on Jan. 24.

Monserate added that the Kalibo airport has seven parking bays, but only six are now operational. The other parking bay was still undergoing repair.

The refurbishment of the existing passenger terminal building is also ongoing. The rehab is expected to be completed by March.

When done, the building will accommodate waiting and arriving passengers and is seen to enhance convenience at the Kalibo airport.

Moreover, KIA’s long-term development program includes the construction of a new and bigger terminal building.

Other scheduled site development work at the airport this year is the P827-million new apron and taxiway, the re-blocking of apron pavement, construction of a power house, and runway trip grade correction.

In 2017, the airport served 1,093,564 domestic passengers and 1,426,604 international travelers. (With Akean Forum/PN)
