NBI to probe ex-Cebu prosecutor’s ambush

MANILA – The Department of Justice (DOJ) has ordered the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) to investigate the ambush of former Cebu City assistant city prosecutor Mary Ann Castro.

Castro was shot dead Thursday evening while driving along Escario Street, Cebu City.

“I immediately directed the NBI to conduct an investigation…and identify the perpetrators at the soonest possible time,” said Secretary Menardo Guevarra in a statement.

An unidentified gunman on board a motorcycle shot dead Castro, who was driving a yellow Nissan Juke along Escario Street around 9:50 p.m.

After the ambush, Castro’s vehicle swerved across the street and hit a galvanized iron.
The former Cebu City prosecutor was slapped with a suspension last year by the DOJ over a conflict with the family of the late vice governor Gregorio Sanchez.

A six-month suspension was also imposed on Castro in 2016 for violating the rule on non-forum shopping when she filed separate petitions for annulment of marriage in two trial courts in Cebu in 2000.

The Supreme Court also handed a six-month suspension on Castro in 2015 for allegedly wielding “excessive influence” after she asked the police to help her brother who complained about a defective vehicle he bought in 2001./PN
