BACOLOD City – Gov. Eugenio Jose Lacson of Negros Occidental is considering releasing an executive order for wearing face masks.
Data from the Provincial Health Office showed a 258.93 percent increase in influenza-like illnesses, or 2,211 cases this year compared to 616 cases in 2022.
Lacson explained on Wednesday night that there might be a call to wear face masks again, citing what is happening in neighboring countries.
On Monday, health reform advocate Dr. Anthony “Tony” Leachon urged the public to get vaccinated against flu and pneumonia in light of reports of an increase in respiratory illnesses in Northern China.
“In case I issue an executive order, I hope the media will support me in explaining why there’s a need to wear a face mask,” Lacson said.
Meanwhile, Negros Occidental Provincial Health Officer Dr. Girlie Pinongan said most of the cases were children.
The municipality of Isabela has the highest number of recorded cases at 1,680 and is currently attributing the most recent spike of influenza-like cases to the onset of the cold season.
Pinongan asked the public to wear face masks, especially in enclosed spaces, and to immediately consult a doctor if afflicted with the symptoms.
She also reminded the public not to take antibiotics without a doctor’s prescription. (Watchmen Daily Journal)/PN
