BACOLOD City – The Office of the Provincial Agriculturist (OPA) said the provincial government is planning to purchase buffaloes from Australia.
During a business trip to Australia earlier this month, OPA acting head Atty. Japhet Masculino and Negros Occidental governor Alfredo Marañon Jr. toured one of the agricultural components in Australia as part of strengthening the ties between Negros Occidental and the Northern Territories in terms of research and imports.
Masculino said the Australian buffalo is a cross breed of Italian and Bulgarian buffaloes, that is why it is bigger compared to the local carabao found in the Philippines.
Masculino also explained that the Australian buffalo is far more prolific when it comes to meat and dairy production.
“It is prolific because for milk production alone, it produces around 10 to 15 liters a day,”
he said.
He also disclosed that Vietnam and Brunei recently imported around 5,000 and 400 heads, respectively.
Meanwhile, Masculino revealed that OPA has already submitted a request to the provincial government to purchase new vehicles.
The budget is around P2.4 million for two service vehicles – one ordinary SUV and one pickup truck.
“As for the bidding we have not started yet, because we are still seeking the approval of the DILG [Department of Interior and Local Government],” Masculino said./PN
