MANILA – Following his successful debut in the 112 pound division, newly-crowned World Boxing Organization (WBO) Inter-Continental flyweight champion Donnie Nietes will next be aiming for a third division world title.
The Murcia, Negros Occidental-native Nietes validated his move to the flyweight class with a clinical unanimous decision win over Mexican Edgar Sosa on Sunday at the Stubhub Center in Carson, California.
According to ALA Promotions president Michael Aldeguer, Nietes is likely to become the top contender for the WBO world flyweight belt, which was recently vacated by Mexican Juan Francisco Estrada.
The said belt, however, is set to be disputed by Chinese Zou Shiming and Thai boxer Kwanpichit Onesongchaigym in the undercard of the Manny Pacquiao-Jessie Vargas match on Nov. 6.
“That impressive win over former world champion Sosa validated Donnie’s move to 112 and the chance to capture another world title,” said Aldeguer. “We’ll try to negotiate the fight to happen here in the Philippines.”
Nietes, for his part, said he intends to stay for a couple of years in the flyweight division despite the departure of his “targets” Estrada and Nicaraguan Roman Gonzales, who both moved up to the super flyweight division.
“I am definitely aiming for the world title here since I am going to stay in this division for a while,” said Nietes. “After a couple of years, I will follow Gonzales and Estrada at the super flyweight division.”
The 34-year-old Nietes recently ended his run as the longest reigning Filipino world boxing champion by giving up his WBO light flyweight championship to move up to the flyweight division.
Nietes totes a 39-1-4 win-loss-draw ring record including 22 knockout wins. The Negrense boxer is also on a 28-bout winning run since his lone loss to Indonesian Angky Angkotta./PN
