KALIBO, Aklan – The intensified crackdown on illegal drugs has resulted in overcrowding in the district jail in Barangay Nalook.
This made the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP) consider build a new one in Makato town.
Among the 489 inmates, 45 were females, according to BJMP-Aklan deputy head Senior Jail Officer 4 Rolyn Malolos.
Based on United Nations standards on jails, the BJMP-supervised facility should house only 200 detainees.
Aside from the district jail, the Aklan Rehabilitation Center was also dealing with congestion.
The BJMP, which operates under the Department of the Interior and Local Government, asked from the local government of Makato a 2,000-square-meter lot where a new detention facility may be put up.
Meanwhile female inmates will soon occupy the two-storey newly constructed building inside the BJMP property.
A perimeter fence for the building has yet to be built. (Aklan Forum Journal/PN)
