ILOILO – For decades, residents of Alimodian’s upland “Seven Cities” (seven organic vegetable-producing barangays) endured isolation, trudging through rivers and muddy trails just to reach the town proper. On Aug. 26, that struggle finally ended with the inauguration of two long-awaited projects: the P52.7-million Cabacanan Bridge and a P3.3-million multi-purpose covered gym, hailed as game-changers for more than 3,500 villagers, including Indigenous Peoples who had long been cut off from markets and services.

The 60-meter pre-stressed concrete girder bridge, which spans rich agricultural land across several barangays, is now the lifeline for farmers and IP growers delivering their vegetables to larger markets. By cutting travel time and preserving produce quality, it opens the door to bigger income and greater economic stability.

“This bridge is a powerful symbol of love and cooperation among all residents, as well as the leaders who have dedicated themselves to serving both the province and the town of Alimodian,” said Mayor Ian Kenneth Alfeche.

He stressed that the bridge represents a dream come true for generations of “Seven Cities” residents who had long clamored for better connectivity.

Provincial Engineer Romeo Andig noted that although construction wrapped up in December 2024, final adjustments delayed its opening until May 2025.

Residents say the payoff has been worth the wait.

“Duro gid ka hanggod nabulig na eh (sa taytay) tungod nga indi run mabudlayan ang mga pumuluyo. Mas tawhay rugid ang pag agi nanda kay human dun ang taytay kumpara mo sang una nga matabok ka pa sa suba pwerte ang hirap gid, subong tawhay run,” said Roger, a Barangay Cabacanan resident and volunteer.

For 59-year-old farmer Natividad Mirante, the difference is night and day: “Hanggod nga pasalamat namon kay nakataytay kami. Sang una nga way it taytay hindi kami kakadto sa banwa kang Alimodian…indi kami kapanindahan.”

Alongside the bridge, the new covered gym provides not just a sports and events venue but also a crucial space for disaster response.

Gov. Arthur Defensor Jr., who led the launch, described it as another step in empowering upland communities.

Barangay Captain Jonel Calambro added that the facility has already begun to enrich everyday community life./PN
