ILOILO City – Roy A. Cimatu will visit Western Visayas today in his first field visit as the newly appointed Environment secretary.
Local government and Environment department officials will take Cimatu to the Iloilo Esplanade to show him the developments along the Iloilo River.
Mayor Jed Patrick Mabilog, chairman of the Iloilo-Batiano River Development Council, will also present to him their accomplishments and plans at the Department of Environment and Natural Resources’ Activity Center.
Cimatu will also meet with Iloilo governor Arthur D. Defensor Sr.
Welcoming the new secretary to Iloilo City will be a “great honor and privilege,” according to Environment department regional director Jim O Sampulna. “We look forward to working with him.”
A retired Armed Forces chief of staff, Cimatu was named the Environment secretary after the Commission on Appointments did not confirm Regina Paz Lopez’s appointment as head of the agency.
In the latter part of 2016 President Rodrigo Duterte assigned Cimatu as special envoy to the Middle East, allowing the latter to deal with issues facing overseas Filipino workers and refugees.
“Here I am, wading into a field far removed from soldiery,” Cimatu said in a speech. “Please excuse me if I ask that I be given time to scan and study the terrain” of the DENR.
“I intend to listen to all the voices out there and make full use of our powers and resources to ensure that these various concerns, some of which often times clash, [are] properly and judiciously addressed,” he said. (With a report from DENR Region 6/PN)
