BORACAY ISLAND – More than 1,000 Boracay workers have been identified for the 5,000 jobs offered by the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE).

DOLE-6 regional director Salome Siaton, in an interview on Wednesday, said 1,044 informal workers already profiled and identified would start working on April 27.

The informal workers, including massage therapist, porters, boatmen, tricycle drivers and others are being prioritized in DOLE’s integrated livelihood emergency program also known as TUPAD or “Tulong Panghanapbuhay sa mga Displaced Workers,” said Siaton.

She said at least P50 million was allocated for the program.

Siaton said those who would be hired in the program would be given work related to the rehabilitation of the island.

She said the DOLE would coordinate with the local government of Malay and officials of the three villages in the island to identify the areas where workers would be assigned. The three barangays are Manoc-manoc, Balabag and Yapak.

Aside from the informal workers, Siaton said at least 11,577 workers in the formal sector were already profiled.

She said job opportunities and training would also be given to the formal workers.

She said formal workers can avail of the training and livelihood opportunities to be given by different government agencies.

One of which is the job fair scheduled on April 26 in Kalibo spearheaded by Public Service Employment Office-Aklan.

The profiling of workers is expected to be completed by April 23, she said.

She said the profiling is important to assess the needs of the workers and to identify the programs which they could avail.

“Aside from the emergency employment, affected workers can also look into the trainings that they can avail,” she said.

She said DOLE would be implementing also the Boracay Emergency Employment Program with the Departments of Social Welfare and Development, of Science and Technology, of Trade and Industry, and of Public Works and Highways; and Technical Skills and Development Authority.

Starting April 26, the group will also put up a one-stop shop in Caticlan Jetty Port to assist Boracay workers. (PNA)
