CEBU City – Three fires hit Mandaue City in Cebu province as the New Year started Sunday, destroying a warehouse and razing down at least 210 homes that left some 450 families homeless.

Some P3 million worth of properties went up in smoke, said Senior Fire Officer 1 Edgar Vergara, lead investigator of the Mandaue City Fire Department.

No injuries were reported in the three fires.

The first fire alarm was received at 12:27 a.m. on Sunday when a warehouse along Ouano Street in Barangay Looc caught fire.

Two guards of New Derke Warehouse, owned by Mr. and Mrs. Shinley Lee, told investigators that a wayward sky lantern hit a portion of the storage house’s roof made of plastic.

The warehouse, where assorted plastic wares were stored, was devoured by fire that lasted for about five hours, and damaged some P900,000 in properties.

At 1:01 a.m., another fire struck a community in Sitio Sto. Niño, Barangay Guizo, destroying 90 houses with 300 families.

The fire started at the house of Paulinian Ompong, apparently due to a faulty electrical connection, Vergara said.

The fire, which was put out before 3 a.m., caused some P900,000 in damage to property.

A third fire destroyed 120 houses and displaced 150 families in Sitio Salvacion, Barangay Maguikay.

The Mandaue City Fire Department received the fire alarm around 1:05 a.m. The blaze was put out at 2:26 a.m.

An electrical short circuit may have triggered the fire that started at the house of Bebot Cayoca, investigation showed.

Damage in the third fire was estimated at P1.2 million.

Felix Suico, head of the Mandaue City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office, said the fire victims in Guizo were temporarily taking shelter at one of the barangay’s basketball courts, while those affected by the Maguikay fire were staying at the Sitio Salvacion gymnasium.

Mayor Luigi Quisumbing visited the fire victims as city workers distributed food to them on Sunday morning.

Quisumbing said the City Social Welfare Services has set up tents near the fire sites to attend to the needs of the victims. (PNA)
