ILOILO – Shellfish from the coastal waters of Gigantes Islands in Carles town are not safe for human consumption, according to the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR).

They are “positive for paralytic shellfish poison beyond the regulatory limit,” the BFAR said in a Dec. 28, 2016 bulletin, citing latest laboratory results from the agency and local government units.

But coastal waters in other parts of Western Visayas, including those in Aklan and Capiz, and in Negros Island Region are “free from toxic red tides.”

All shellfish and Acetes sp., or alamang, from red tide-positive areas may not be eaten by humans, the BFAR said. Selling or buying them is not advised.

Fish, squids, shrimps, and crabs may be consumed as long as they are fresh and washed thoroughly, and internal organs such as gills and intestines are removed before cooking, said the agency.

Health experts have warned that eating shellfish from red tide-positive areas may cause respiratory irritation or, worse, poisoning.

Other areas positive for paralytic shellfish poison beyond the regulatory limit were Irong-Irong and Cambatutay bays in Western Samar; Matarinao Bay in Eastern Samar; coastal waters of Leyte; coastal waters of Calubian and Carigara Bay in Leyte; coastal waters of Dauis and Tagbilaran City in Bohol; and coastal waters of Biliran province./PN
