BACOLOD City – Liga ng mga Barangay president Noli Villarosa announced on Thursday that there will be no barangay election this year.
It will be held next year along with a plebiscite for federalism, Villarosa told a news conference at the barangay hall of Tangub.
But City Election Office Mavil Majarucon-Sia cannot confirm the Tangub barangay captain’s announcement.
The election may be postponed only when Congress approves a law postponing it, the lawyer stressed. As far as she knows, Sia said, the barangay election this year will push through.
According to Villarosa, the National Executive Board of the National Liga ng mga Barangay, of which he is a member, approved last year a resolution seeking the postponement of the barangay election.
Another resolution seeks to extend the term of barangay captains to five from two, he said.
Both resolutions have been submitted to the Senate and the House of Representatives, the local Liga president said.
And since there will be no barangay election, all village officials will be in a holdover capacity, said Villarosa.
During the general assembly of the League of Municipalities of the Philippines at the Manila Hotel on Tuesday, President Rodrigo Duterte mentioned he did not want the barangay election held this year due to the alleged influence of drug money in elections./PN
