“We sleep, but the loom of life never stops, and the pattern which was weaving when the sun went down is weaving when it comes up in the morning.” – Henry Ward Beecher

IN MANY ways, society is like a fabric. The product of a multiplicity of relatively simple interactions, adding up to form a complex system, seemingly as complex as the warp, weft, and twills of a woven textile.

Each bolt of cloth is made up of thousands of lengths of threads, each contributing to the function and integrity of the whole. Like different people, with different colors, different ideals, different colors, each one having a significant purpose for the advancement of society. Tasks, however small or insignificant yet are integral parts that are needed in a society.

In every aspect of our intertwining communities and cultures there is now more than ever a need to embody Calidad Humana – a Spanish phrase that loosely translates to human compassion and humanity.

Now, Calidad Humana is, I believe, not in the grandness or outward importance of the function of the person, but in how one imbues the ideals and values of his/her work. Plato dictated that social justice is achieved when all parts of the body, may they be minor or major, do their share to reach the greater good of the system.

Calidad Humana is in the way diverse people work hand in hand to sew shut the holes and faults of an unraveling society. Often going unnoticed, Calidad Humana is in being proud of your work, however minute other people may think of it.

Let us together join hands to strengthen the seams of the fabric of our society. Because as expressed by the age old-saying, “The whole is greater than the sum of all its parts.”/PN
