MANILA – Sen. Franklin Drilon denied allegations that the Liberal Party (LP) is planning to oust President Rodrigo Duterte.
“There is no truth to it. We respect the mandate of our people,” Drilon said.
But, the senate president pro tempore said the LP will continue to “state our positions on various positions na baka naman hindi sang-ayon doon sa position ng pangulo.”
The LP has condemned the sudden burial of the late dictator Ferdinand Marcos at the Libingan ng mga Bayani.
Allowing the former president to be buried in the heroes’ cemetery was a “monumental injustice,” they added.
Meanwhile, Drilon explained that in the Senate senators decide on their own without any partisan bias.
“Because of the weakness of our political system, there’s no party stand… There are no formal alliances in the Senate,” the Ilonggo lawmaker added.
President Duterte has claimed that the LP is seeking to oust him to benefit Vice President Leni Robredo.
Robredo, former Camarines Sur representative, was the vice presidential candidate of the previous administration in the 2016 election.
She defeated Duterte’s candidate Sen. Alan Peter Cayetano and the president’s friend Sen. Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr.
“‘Yung mga yellow diyan, nagde-demonstrate kayo diyan. You want me out kasi you cannot accept defeat,” Duterte said in a speech Wednesday.
On Monday, Robredo resigned as chief of the Housing and Urban Development Coordinating Council after she received the President’s directive preventing her from attending Cabinet meetings./PN
