KALIBO, Aklan – The Holy Week in the province had been generally peaceful, according to the Aklan Police Provincial Office (APPO).

No major untoward incidents were reported, said Senior Superintendent Lope Manlapaz, acting APPO director.

Municipal police stations were on alert to guarantee the safety of travelers, he said.

A “comprehensive security plan” was in place even before the Holy Week, and measures were stepped up with the help of Army, Navy, Coast Guard, and Maritime Group officers after the Abu Sayyaf Group attack in Bohol, said Manlapaz.

While no augmentation force from other police offices in Western Visayas was assigned in Aklan, the Police Regional Office 6 sent Regional Public Safety Company personnel to Boracay Island.

Aside from 250 uniformed police officers, more than 500 personnel from other law enforcement agencies, including Task Group Boracay, helped maintain peace and order in the island resort.

Some of the security personnel assigned in Aklan will be redeployed to other areas in Western Visayas in preparation for activities after the Holy Week, said Manlapaz.

Boracay will host Association of Southeast Asian Nations meetings from April 28 to 30, while Antique will host the 2017 Palarong Pambansa from April 23 to 29. (With Aklan Forum Journal/PN
