BORACAY – Drinking alcoholic beverages in public areas in the island will be regulated.
The Sangguniang Bayan (SB) approved an ordinance setting limits to the consumption of alcoholic drinks in public areas across Malay, including Boracay.
Alcoholic drinks are prohibited in all public areas including but not limited to roadsides, within 6 meters from the center of the road, streets, alleys, sidewalks, sports complex and grounds, within 5 meters from riverbanks, public parks, and beach areas, the ordinance stated.
The ordinance shall be enforced regardless of the fact that drinking alcoholic beverages is part of Boracay nightlife, said the author, SB member Nenette Graf.
“Drinking at the beach areas is now strictly prohibited,” Graf stressed.
But the municipal councilor clarified that locals and tourists may still drink “within the allowed areas of beachfront establishments.”
The prohibitions also aim to prevent nuisance activities, as well as suppress events “inimical to the safety, security, comfort, and convenience of our island residents and tourists,” said the councilor.
Moreover, Graf said, the regulation will also help prevent the throwing of bottles and other trash to the beach.
On first offense, violators will be fined P500 and their alcoholic beverage will be confiscated.
A P1,000 fine will be imposed on second offense, and a P2,500 fine or a 30-day imprisonment for the third and succeeding offenses. (PNA)
