ANTIQUE – The Provincial Health Office (PHO) here has assured that there are currently no confirmed or suspected cases of mpox (monkeypox) in the province.
“The Office of the Provincial Health Officer (PHO-Antique) informs the public that there are no suspected or confirmed cases of mpox in the province of Antique at this time,” read part of the PHO advisory on May 29.
Despite this, the PHO urged residents to remain vigilant and watch out for possible signs and symptoms of mpox.
“We encourage everyone to stay alert and take precautions by recognizing early symptoms such as rashes with fever, swollen lymph nodes, body aches, and fatigue,” the advisory further stated.
Mpox, a viral zoonotic disease caused by the monkeypox virus, is transmitted through skin-to-skin contact with infected individuals, exposure to bodily fluids and respiratory droplets, and contact with contaminated materials.
The PHO, in coordination with the Department of Health (DOH) and the wider health sector, also reminded the public to strictly follow basic health protocols to prevent the possible spread of mpox. These include practicing proper respiratory etiquette by covering the mouth when coughing or sneezing, ensuring good ventilation in living and working spaces, washing hands regularly with soap and clean water or using alcohol-based sanitizers, and avoiding close contact with individuals showing symptoms of mpox.
The PHO continues to monitor the disease through the Antique Provincial Integrated Disease Surveillance and Response Unit.
The public is advised to immediately contact the nearest primary health facility if they experience symptoms or encounter individuals who may be exhibiting signs of mpox.
