ILOILO City – Today, the country celebrates Independence Day with Mindanao under martial law.
Ilonggo militants led by the human rights alliance Karapatan-Panay will call for the lifting of martial law and an end to extrajudicial killings, said Reyland Vergara, the group’s secretary general.
Members will gather at Plzoleta Gay for a rally that starts at 3 p.m.
“There is no genuine freedom and no real change in this country under the Duterte administration,” said Vergara.
What else has this government to show aside from its campaign against illegal drugs, he asked.
“There is no genuine land reform and human rights violations remain a concern,” lamented Vergara.
Even the constitutionally-guaranteed freedom of expression is under threat, he said.
“Gusto pa gani nila nga mahipos ang media sa nakita nga kasal-anan,” said Vergara.
He warned the government against kowtowing to the wishes of foreign masters such as China and the United States.
“Wala gid kita nakabatyag sang matuod nga pagbag-o luwas lang abi sa ginapadayaw ‘ya nga away kontra sa druga,” said Vergara./PN
