BACOLOD City – There will be no suspension of classes in all public elementary and high schools on June 5 and 6 in Bacolod City despite the planned transport strike of the United Negros Drivers and Operators Center.
Mayor Evelio Leonardia announced this development on Friday after a composite meeting with officials of the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB), Land Transportation Office (LTO), Bacolod City Police Office, and Department of Education.
Leonardia said that based on their assessment, the planned transport strike would neither be so massive nor paralyzing to merit the suspension of classes.
“Maybe to a certain extent, the transport strike can cause some inconveniences to the riding public, but not to the degree that it would be necessary to suspend classes,” the mayor said.
Suspending classes will be impractical on the part of the pupils and the students for they will miss the first two days of school, he added.
Leonardia reiterated that he has already ordered the deployment of two city tourist buses and 10 trucks of IPM-CDC to Barangays Handumanan, Sum-ag, Bata, Estefania, Granada, Alangilan, and Mansilingan from 7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. on Monday and Tuesday to pick up passengers and drop them near their schools or workplaces.
We always make sure that the trucks are clean and fit for “human transportation,” he stressed.
Leonardia also ordered the Bacolod City Police Office, through acting director Senior Superintendent Jack Wanky, to ensure peace and order and maximize police visibility.
For their part, LTFRB-Region 6 legal officer Ma. Joscet Buyco-Abellar and LTO-Bacolod chief Renato Novero said part of their contingency plans, or in case of extreme necessity, is to provide buses for big volumes of stranded commuters.
Moreover, Leonardia also ordered the setup of a Command Center at the Bacolod City Government Center that will be manned by LTFRB, LTO, DepEd, and city government officials to answer and respond to traffic concerns. (City PIO/PN)
