MANILA – Volleyball superstars, led by Alyssa Valdez and Rachel Anne Daquis, could be out of the national women’s volleyball team when the “Final 18” roster is revealed.

Larong Volleyball sa Pilipinas Inc. (LVPI) acting president Peter Cayco said that the big names could be removed from the roster following their absence during the “Clash of Heroes” exhibition game last Monday.

“The coaches came up with a points-system in picking the players that is based on their performance, attitude and attendance. Those who showed up in the Clash of Heroes will definitely have additional points,” Cayco said.

Aside from Valdez and Gonzaga, other absentees are Gretchel Soltones, Elaine Kasilag, Myla Pablo, Jovelyn Gonzaga, Kim Fajardo, Kim Dy, Dawn Macandili, Abigail Marano, Kat Tolentino, and Madeleine Madayag.

Those who suited up are Mika Reyes, Fatima General, Frances Molina, Roselle Baliton, Lourdes Clemente, Christine Rosario, Shaya Adorador, Jaja Santiago, Kathleen Arado, Genevieve Casugod, Aiza Maizo-Pontillas, Rhea Dimaculangan, Denise Lazaro, Marivic Meneses, and Maika Ortiz.

Once national women’s volleyball team head coach Francis Vicente makes the cut, the LVPI will forward the names to the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) to be included in the roster of national athletes.

Then, the team will be whittled down to 12 players when the Southeast Asian Games task force formally requires the federation to submit its entrants by name for the 29th SEA Games in Kuala Lumpur this August.

The country participated in the SEAG for the first time in a decade last 2015, but the team led by Maraño, Daquis, Santiago, Gonzaga and Valdez failed to land a medal finish./PN
