BACOLOD City – Provincial Board member Salvador Escalante of the 2nd District of Negros Occidental said the New People’s Army (NPA) was not responsible for attacking a solar power plant in Barangay Tinampaan, Cadiz City.
The attack happened around 10:30 p.m. on Sept. 14, destroying about 90 solar panels with an estimated value of P3 million, Cadiz City police said.
Cadiz City police officer-in-charge Chief Inspector Rocky Desear said 17 to 20 armed men attacked the power plant.
Recovered from the crime scene were seven empty shells of M14, M16 and AK47 firearms, M203 grenade launchers, several .45-caliber gun bullets, and a grenade that failed to explode.
Several weeks prior to the incident, the Helios Energy Power Corp. received a letter demanding them to give a “revolutionary tax” to the armed group.
The police have yet to confirm if the attackers were NPA members.
Escalante, who once served as mayor of Cadiz, believed the perpetrators were only using the NPA as “cover.”
“There is no way for the NPA to commit such act,” Escalante said.
