MANILA – A “knee-jerk reaction” was how Sen. Grace Poe described the plan of the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) to expand the number coding traffic scheme.
The MMDA considers the measure a solution to the traffic problems in the capital.
Poe believes this may just prompt well-off motorists to buy more cars and thereby worsen the vehicular congestion. She advised the MMDA to carefully study the plan in consultation with stakeholders.
“Ito ba ang pinaka–epektibong solusyon? Ito ba ang kailangan natin?” Poe, public services committee chairwoman, said on Wednesday. “Hindi kaya mas marami ang maperwisyo niyo kaysa matulungan?”
Traffic problems in the capital are causing the Philippines to lose P3 billion a day, and the amount could reach P6 billion by 2030, a study by the Japan International Cooperation Agency showed.
“Matatandaan na noong Disyembre, lumutang na ang panukalang ito dahil sa inaasang trapik sa pagpasok ng Pasko, subalit tinutulan ito ng Metro Manila Council na binubuo ng 17 mayors sa Metro Manila,” Poe said.
“Tandaan sana natin na hindi pa gaanong maaasahan ang pampublikong transportasyon, at kung ipapatupad itong expanded number coding scheme, bibili lamang ng pangalawa o pangatlong kotse ang mga may kaya,” she added.
Poe finds the MMDA’s plan experimental. “Sana huwag namang gawing guinea pigs ang ating mga kababayan.”/PN
