KALIBO, Aklan – The Boracay Inter-Agency Task Force declared Oct. 15 as the “Aklan Day in Boracay.”

Oct. 15 is the start of the 11-day dry-run in view of the Oct. 26 island reopening.

The task force said the declaration is to appreciate various stakeholders in Aklan for their support to Boracay’s rehabilitation.

During the dry-run, local tourists will be allowed to enter and enjoy Boracay’s beaches.

At least 25 hotels and resorts included in the initial list of the Department of Tourism will operate to accommodate guests during the “soft opening.”

Gov. Florencio Miraflores said Environment secretary Roy Cimatu recommended the declaration of the “Aklan Day in Boracay.”

Boracay was ordered closed for six months beginning April 26 upon the order of President Rodrigo Duterte who called the island a “cesspool.”

Before the closure, about 6,400 tourists stayed in Boracay daily, which was beyond the island’s carrying capacity, a study of Ecosystems Research and Development Bureau of the DENR showed. (With Aklan Forum Journal/PN)
