MANILA – Only those who support a federal government may run under the Partido Demokratiko Pilipino – Lakas ng Bayan (PDP-Laban) in the 2019 elections, Senate President Aquilino Pimentel III said.

Federalism is one of the guiding principles of the ruling party, which has more than 300,000 members across the country, said the party president.

“You cannot be a member of PDP-Laban, much less a candidate of the party, and not support one of its core tenets,” said Pimentel.

Prospective candidates must support the programs of President Rodrigo Duterte until the end of his term, he stressed.

According to Pimentel, the PDP-Laban is open to non-party members joining its lineup provided that they support Duterte and federalism.

But party members are the priority in the selection process, he clarified.

On March 12 a total of 30,000 new PDP-Laban members took their oaths before top party officials at the Malolos Sports and Convention Center in Bulacan province.

Their membership – two senators, 122 representatives, 38 governors, 23 vice governors, 540 mayors, and 316 vice mayors – increased 10 percent that day, Pimentel claimed./PN
