MANILA – Sen. Francis Pangilinan believes that dissent is a necessary attribute of democracy.

“Dissent does not mean destabilization,” Pangilinan said in a statement on Sunday.

The senator said the Legislature may check the Executive branch if there is abuse of power.

“In fact, should there be governmental excesses or abuses in the executive department i.e. Department of Justice BID Jack Lam P50 Million corruption scandal, Espinosa Rubout case, Philippine National Police Tokhang for Ransom Jee Ick Joo Murder case, Department of Foreign Affairs OSEC American Citizenship issue, 5,000 unsolved vigilante killings etc, it is our constitutional duty in the legislative branch to act as a check and balance on the Executive branch,” he explained.

Pangilinan also reminded the present administration that the Filipino nation lives in a democracy and “not a dictatorship.”

“Dissent to ensure checks and balance is a constitutional duty,” the opposition Liberal party president concluded./PN
