ANTIQUE – More than 200 seedlings of talisay and native dangkalan trees were planted along the coastlines of barangays Cubay and Pajo in Libertad town on Tuesday.

Personnel of the Municipal Environment and Natural Resources (MENRO) of Libertad did the planting.

Talisay and dangkalan trees are deemed “beach forest species”.

“They will serve as natural defenses of coastal communities against violent storm surges and coastal erosion,” according to the MENRO in a statement.

The MENRO aims to establish “coastal greenbelts” in Libertad by planting coastlines with beach forest trees and mangroves.

Just this June 17, MENRO had a tree planting activity along coast of Barangay Pas. Dangkalan and talisay tree seedlings were also planted.

The planting is part of the observance of Environment Month in Libertad.

Then President Corazon Aquino approved Proclamation No. 237 on April 4, 1988 declaring the month of June every year as Philippine Environment Month to give time and effort towards the protection, enhancement and development of the country’s environment.

For this year’s celebration of Environment Month, the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) is highlighting efforts towards the protection and sustainable use of the country’s natural resources through activities that call for collective and transformative action for the protection and restoration of the planet.

DENR Acting Secretary Jim O. Sampulna said this year’s celebration should be a “demonstration of the DENR’s continued commitment to the environment and to the Filipinos that the mission to conserve and protect our natural resources remains despite the challenges we face.”/PN
