BORACAY – A record-high 70,879 visitors went to this island resort for weeklong parties that peaked on May 1, Labor Day.
The island also welcomed 55,370 regular tourists from April 25 to May 1, statistics from the Malay Municipal Tourism Office showed.
Most tourists during the week were recorded on April 29 (14,564). April 28 had 13,464, while April 30 had 11,187 arrivals.
Of the total tourists attending the LaBoracay, 51,570 were domestic.
If locals who used the Caticlan jetty port and travellers who used the exclusive Caticlan Welcome Center of a high-end resort are counted, LaBoracay visitor figures could swell to between 90,000 and 100,000.
Foreign and local tourists travelling to Boracay via the Caticlan jetty port are required to register upon arrival at the gateway.
April this year remained to have all-time-high arrivals of 233,233 — up 27 percent from the 183,047 in the same month in 2016.
The sharp rise in LaBoracay visitors led to vehicular congestion and long lines at the Cagban and Caticlan ports.
Rooms in hotels, resorts and some homestay houses in the island and Barangay Caticlan in mainland Malay were fully booked, too, during the weekend.
