KALIBO, Aklan – Tourist arrivals in the world-renowned Boracay Island continue to surge despite President Rodrigo Duterte’s pronouncements – one calling the beach resort a “cesspool.”
NivenMaquirang, jetty port administrator, said from Feb. 1 to 15, the island posted more than 99,700 tourist arrivals.
The arrivals were that of 70,876 foreign tourists, 26,872domestic tourists, and 2,026 overseas Filipino workers (OFWs).
“We have registered a 17.7-percent increase [this year],” said Maquirang.
In the same period last year, the island only recorded 84,707 tourist arrivals: 52,342 foreign tourists, 30,128 domestic tourists and 2,237 OFWs.
Maquirang expects more tourists to come to Boracay this summer.
The President on Feb. 9 threatened to close Boracay if its environmental problems remain unfixed after six months./PN
