CAPIZ — A P1-million fishing supplies and general merchandise store was officially inaugurated on May 7, 2026, in Barangay Binaobawan, Pilar, Capiz, providing a major boost to the local fishing community.
The initiative, led by the Amoma Binaobawan Fisherfolks Association, responds to long-standing calls from local fishermen for a more accessible and cost-efficient source of essential fishing gear and household supplies.
The establishment of the store is part of the Sustainable Livelihood Program implemented by the Provincial Government of Capiz.
Gov. Fredenil H. Castro, together with the Office of the Provincial Agriculturist, has supported the project, which aims to promote economic development and strengthen livelihood opportunities for fisherfolk and farmers across the province.
The newly opened store is expected to ease the burden on association members by allowing them to purchase fishing equipment and basic household goods without traveling to distant commercial centers, thereby reducing transport costs and time spent.
Previously, many fishermen had to travel long distances to secure supplies, incurring additional expenses that affected their earnings.
Fernand L. Caldea, president of the Amoma Binaobawan Fisherfolks Association, said the project is expected to significantly benefit the local fishing community.
He noted that aside from improving access to supplies, the store will also serve as a potential income-generating enterprise for the association, with revenues that can be reinvested to support members, especially during periods of adverse weather conditions that disrupt fishing activities.
Beyond its commercial function, the store is also seen as a community hub that promotes cooperation among fisherfolk while encouraging more sustainable fishing practices through improved access to essential resources.
