ILOILO City – The city government, through a supplemental budget (No. 2-2018), has allotted P5 million for the rehabilitation of the Iloilo Central Market.

According to Engineer Mae Puerto of the City Engineer’s Office (CEO), they conducted an assessment on Aug. 24.

To be prioritized for repair are the market’s roof and drainage, said Puerto.

“Kon may sobra, i-alleviate naton ang fish section then obrahan drainage,” she added.

The CEO is now preparing the program of works.

Lourdes Cordon, representative of Rex Donasco who is the president of the Association of Stall Owners and Transient Vendors at the Iloilo Central Market, agreed that the roof badly needed repair.

“Every time mag-ulan, daw kasagingan kag daw may falls pa,” said Cordon.

Cordon also noted the non-functional drainage of the market.

“Every time mag-ulan, kon si Mr. Donasco pa maghambal, may tsunami. Naga-ilig ang tubig halin sa isdaan nga daw parehas bala wala sang kanal.”

The Iloilo Central Market is famous for dried fish and native products.

According to Cordon, the CEO is not amenable to the idea of totally demolishing the central market and construct a new one.

For now, rehabilitation is enough, she said./PN
