ILOILO City – The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) will implement P8.3-billion worth of programs and projects in Western Visayas this year.

Regional Director Rebecca Geamala said this year’s budget is bigger than last year’s P6.8 billion.

DSWD aims to strengthen its regular programs and services to include Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Program (Pantawid), Sustainable Livelihood Program, Social Pension for Indigent Senior Citizens Program, and Kapit-Bisig Laban sa Kahirapan – Comprehensive Integrated Delivery of Social Service (KALAHI-CIDSS), among others.

Geamala said 315,000 indigent senior citizens in Region 6 will be covered by the social pension program. Its budget increased to P2.1 billion. The P438-million budget last year served only 78,000 indigent elderly.

However, Geamala said, they will be stricter this time in identifying beneficiaries of the social pension program.

There are indigent senior citizens in the region who are not beneficiaries of the program but deserve to be listed while there are some senior citizens that should be delisted from the program, she said.

DSWD is urging local government units, municipal social welfare and development officers, and barangay officials to carefully identify the beneficiaries of the social pension program.

She also urged them to properly implement other programs and projects of DSWD this year. (PNA)
