MANILA – The boxing world is in shock following the sudden death of British legend Ricky Hatton, with Filipino icon Manny Pacquiao leading tributes to his former rival and friend.
“I am deeply saddened to hear about the passing of Ricky Hatton. He was not only a great fighter inside the ring but also a brave and kind man in life,” Pacquiao said in a statement on Sunday.
Pacquiao, who delivered a devastating second-round knockout of Hatton in their 2009 megafight in Las Vegas, said he would forever cherish the bond forged through battle. “We shared unforgettable moments in boxing history, and I will always honor the respect and sportsmanship he showed,” he added.
The 46-year-old Hatton, a former two-division world champion, was discovered lifeless at his home in Hyde, Greater Manchester early Sunday morning. Police confirmed his death but said it was not being treated as suspicious.
Known as “The Hitman,” Hatton’s aggressive, crowd-pleasing style and underdog grit made him one of Britain’s most adored champions. A loyal Manchester City fan, he carried the pride of his hometown to global stardom.
“Ricky fought bravely, not just in the ring, but in his journey through life. He truly had a good fight, and we are all blessed to have been part of his wonderful journey,” Pacquiao said. “My heartfelt prayers and condolences to the Hatton family and loved ones. May he rest in peace.”
Outside the ropes, Hatton’s life was marked by public battles with depression, addiction, and past suicide attempts. Despite these struggles, he remained a beloved figure in British sports and had recently been preparing for a comeback bout this December.
