MANILA – The Malacañang urged the public to “stay calm” and “remain vigilant and alert” after subsequent earthquakes occurred in Batangas and was felt in parts of Luzon on Saturday.
“Let us not forward information from unverified sources that may cause undue alarm,” said presidential spokesperson Ernesto Abella.
The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) reported that a magnitude 5.6 earthquake hit Mabini, Batangas at 3:04 p.m. on Saturday.
It was followed by a magnitude 6 quake in Mabini at 3:09 p.m; a magnitude 4.1 quake west of San Luis, Batangas at 3:29 p.m.; magnitude 4.7 quake west of Mabini at 4:36 p.m.; and a magnitude 3.1 quake east of Mabini at 5:26 p.m., Phivolcs said.
According to the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction Management Office of Batangas, Saturday’s earthquake partially damaged the Basilica of the Immaculate Concepcion Parish in Batangas City.
It also seriously damaged the Mabini General Hospital and caused part of Camp Netanya Resort to collapse.
Landslides also caused closure of roads in barangays Dela Paz, Ilijan and Pagkilatan in Batangas and barangay Bilibinwang in Agoncillo.
Abella said disaster officials are assessing the situation and will provide the public updates when more information becomes available.
Meanwhile, a 5.5-magnitude earthquake, an Intensity VI (strong) earthquake, was also recorded in Tingloy, Batangas last April 4 at 8:58 p.m./PN
