MANILA – President Rodrigo Duterte on Wednesday extended his congratulations to new South Korean President Moon Jae-in.
Democratic Party’s Moon won 41 percent of the vote against Hoong Joo-pyo of the Liberty Korea Party (24 percent) and Ahn Cheol-soo of the People’s Party (21 percent), the National Election Commission reported yesterday.
“The Philippines and the Republic of Korea have strong, comprehensive and long-standing bilateral ties,” presidential spokesperson Ernesto Abella said in a statement.
“Our two countries have extensive cooperation on political, economic, cultural and people-to-people exchanges in the bilateral, regional, and multilateral spheres.”
A human rights lawyer, the 64-year-old Moon succeeded former president Park Geun-hye, who was impeached in March over corruption and bribery scandals.
Abella said the Duterte administration is committed to further enhancing the country’s relations with South Korea under the Moon presidency.
“We wish him all the best,” the spokes added.
During his campaign, Moon said he favors dialogue with North Korean leader Kim Jong-Un “to achieve peaceful reunification.”
