Paraiso, Subido carry UST past UP in UAAP

MANILA – University of Santo Tomas Growling Tigers leaned on clutch triples to sink University of the Philippines Maroons, 84-78, in the UAAP Season 82 Men’s Basketball at the SM Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City.

Brent Paraiso and Henri Lorenzo Subido came up with back-to-back triples as the Tigers turned a 74-78 advantage to 82-78 with 26.7 seconds remaining.

Subido sealed the win with free throws. He finished with 13 points on a 3-of-6 sniping from deep, alongside five rebounds and five assists.

Paraiso, on the other hand, notched six points and four boards.

The Growling Tigers rose to 6-5.

“Being a young team and making the right decisions down the stretch, that was big for us,” said Tigers head coach Aldin Ayo. “I told them to make every possession count, execute the plays, and make the right decisions, and they did.”

For the UST, Rookie Sherwin Concepcion tallied a career-best 16 points and five rebounds while Soulemane Chabi Yo produced a double-double in the tune of 14 points and 10 boards.


Crispin John Cansino was the one to kickstart Growling Tigers’ scoring barrage in the opening period with four triples before Concepcion, Zachary Huang and Mark Nonoy joined the fray.

UST nailed 12 triples in the first half for a 48-41 edge.


The Fighting Maroons, however, showed some life in the second half. It slowly chopped the deficit before taking the lead midway in the fourth quarter with their baskets.


Kobe Paras finished with 18 points, five rebounds, two assists, and two blocks even after injuring his right shoulder in the second quarter.

The Fighting Maroons are still at second place with their 6-3 card./PN
