Passi chess players win 1 gold, 3 silvers in ASEAN age-group chess

PASSINHONS Queen Rose and Ruslan Pamplona bagged one gold and three silver medals in the 19th ASEAN+ Age-Group Chess Championships at The Royal Mandaya Hotel in Davao City on June 28.

Queen Rose captured a gold medal in Under 12 team blitz and a silver in individual blitz while Ruslan settled for silver medal finishes in Under 8 standard and rapid.

Queen Rose, along with Rollane Marie Alonzo and Janiella Garcia, captured the gold in blitz after finishing with 139 points. But Queen Rose settled for silver in individual blitz with 7 points behind Vietnam’s Yen Nhi Nguyen Phuc.

Ruslan, along with Al-Basher Buto and Lawrence Raphael Lawan, finished on second place in the standard event after finishing with 139 points behind gold medalist Vietnam, which had 146 points.

Meanwhile, Cyril Telesforo of San Joaquin, Iloilo got the highest score among 26 other participants during the two-day FIDE Arbitration Seminar, a sidelight of the 19th ASEAN+ Age Group Chess Championships.

Another Ilonggo also passed the exam – National Master Carlito Lavega.

Telesforo and Lavega are now National Arbiters and need only to acquire four norms to become full-fledged FIDE Arbiters, which will make them eligible to officiate in international chess competitions, including the chess Olympiad.

A total of 300 players from Vietnam, Indonesia, Singapore, Myanmar, Thailand, India, South Korea, Denmark, and Switzerland joined the event sanctioned by the National Chess Federation of the Philippines.
