ILOILO City – For the first time in its 45-year history, Pavia, Iloilo’s Carabao-Carroza Festival will have a street dancing competition today.
Prior to this pioneering competition is a parade of 18 decorated bamboo carrozas (carts) representing the 18 barangays of Pavia.
The parade will start in Barangay Ungka-I, Pavia and end at Pavia National High School where the street dancing competition will be held.
Pavia’s tourism officer Shella Hesmaña told Panay News the parade will start at 7 a.m.
The parade of carrozas will be a contest in itself among these carts.
All of Pavia’s 18 barangays have contingents in the street dancing competition. Each will have 12 minutes to perform.
Carabao-Carroza Festival celebrates Pavia’s rich agricultural culture. Hesmaña said the street dance will make the yearly festival more colorful and exciting. Each contingent will have an estimated 100 performers.
Another highlight of the festival today is the carabao race also at Pavia National High School. For years, this has been the highlight of the festivities.
According to the Iloilo provincial government, the race is of two major types: flat racing and carroza-racing. The flat race is where carabaos driven by farmers run across the 100-meter long parallel grassy track; while the carroza race is driven by farmers with carrozas drawn by the carabaos. The race is based on speed and stamina of the carabaos.
The Carabao-Carroza Festival is held every May 3 – the eve of Pavia’s May 4 fiesta./PN
