MANILA – With the number of confirmed cases of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) rising, the PBA has decided to postpone the 2020 PBA Philippine Cup matches.

Commissioner Willie Marcial said the decision to postpone the matches indefinitely was reached during an emergency meeting by the league of governors on Tuesday night.

“Considering the present situation surrounding COVID-19 and the presidential declaration of public health emergency, it is our paramount duty and responsibility to ensure the health and safety of our fans, players, teams, officials, and staff,” said Marcial.

The league will assess the effects of COVID-19 on a day-to-day basis guided by the parameters set by the Department of Health (DOH) and World Health Organization (WHO) and will remain committed to conduct its games and activities in a safe and responsible manner for all its stakeholders, he added.

Also postponed are the ongoing PBA D-League Aspirants Cup and the upcoming PBA 3×3 tournament.

Prior to PBA’s suspension, the UAAP cancelled its women’s and men’s volleyball matches until March 17, while the NCAA also is considering to terminate its remaining events in Season 95./PN
