BACOLOD City – The national headquarters of the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) appointed a new district commander for the Coast Guard District in Western Visayas (CGDWV) on Nov. 13.

Commodore Arnaldo Lim, the outgoing CGDWV district commander, formally stepped down from his post and handed over his duties and responsibilities to Captain Weniel Azcuna, the incoming CGDWV district commander.

The turnover ceremony took place at CGDWV’s headquarters in Bo. Obrero, Lapuz, Iloilo City, and was presided over by PCG Deputy Commandant for Administration, Vice Admiral Allan Victor Dela Vega.

As a token of appreciation, the outgoing CGDWV commander received the Coast Guard Distinguished Service Medal and Ribbon for his invaluable service as the head of the PCG in Western Visayas.

Captain Weniel Azcuna, who previously served as the commander of the Coast Guard Station in Cebu City, has a distinguished record.

He actively participated in search and rescue operations and cleanup efforts following the collision between the ferry vessel M/V Thomas Aquinas and the cargo ship M/V Sulpicio Express Siete off the coast of Talisay City, Cebu, in 2013.

Azcuna also served as the Technical Adviser on Maritime Affairs at the Philippine Embassy in the United Kingdom in 2022, where he delivered lectures on Marine Environment Protection in relation to the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS). (Watchmen Daily Journal)/PN
