MANILA – The Philippine Football Federation (PFF) has formally extended an invitation to Filipino-Spanish midfielder Pedro “Dro” Fernandez to join the Philippine Men’s National Football Team, signaling continued efforts to tap overseas-based talent with Filipino roots.

In a social media post, the PFF expressed interest in seeing Fernandez represent the Philippines in future international competitions, welcoming the possibility of the highly rated midfielder donning the national colors.

The 18-year-old Fernandez is eligible to play for the Philippines through his Filipino heritage and is considered one of the promising young players developed in Spain’s competitive football system.

Fernandez recently drew wider attention amid reports that he is set to leave FC Barcelona less than a season into his stint, with European powerhouse Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) emerging as a potential next destination.

A technically gifted footballer, Fernandez has been part of elite youth setups in Spain, earning recognition for his composure on the ball, vision in midfield, and ability to operate in multiple roles.

His development within top European academies has placed him on the radar of clubs beyond Spain, as well as national team programs seeking young, high-upside players.

PFF’s move underscores its ongoing strategy to expand and deepen the national team pool by reaching out to Filipino players based abroad, particularly those competing or developing in top-tier European environments.

In recent years, the federation has actively recruited dual-nationality players to bolster the Azkals and its youth national teams, aiming to raise the overall level of play and competitiveness on the international stage.

While Fernandez has yet to make a decision regarding international allegiance, the invitation from the PFF opens the door for his potential inclusion in upcoming training camps, friendly matches, or official tournaments, should he choose to commit to the Philippines./PN
