
MANILA – Team Philippines chipped in two more silver and two bronze medals as the 31st Southeast Asian Games that formally opened on Thursday in Hanoi, Vietnam.
Filipino rowers made their presence felt despite using borrowed boats with two medals in the rowing event of the biennial games at the Thu Nguyen Boat Racing Center in Hai Phong Bay in Vietnam.
Tokyo Olympic Games veteran Cris Nievarez and Christian Joseph Jasmin clinched the silver medal for the country after falling short in the men’s doubles lightweight sculls event.
Nievarez and Jasmin finished with a time of seven minutes and .05.585 seconds, finishing behind the Indon tandem of Ardi Kasadi and Kakan Usmana (7:01.385).
Joannie del Gaco, Amelyn Pagulauyan, Mireille Cua, and Kristine Paraon won the bronze medal in the women’s quadruple sculls event by clocking 7:28.879.
The Philippine Kurash team also added another silver and a bronze medal to its collection with solid showings from Sydney Sy Tancontian and Al Rolan Llamas on late Wednesday at the Hoai Duc Gymnasium.
Tancontian, a standout from University of Santo Tomas, fell short in the women’s +87kgs division finale after losing to former Olympian judoka Aye Aye Aung of Myanmar, 1-0.
Playing-coach Llamas, on the other hand, captured a bronze medal in the men’s 60kgs category, while Adrian Josef Perillo fell short in the men’s 66kgs event.
Team Philippines, the defending overall champions in the COVID-19 delayed biennial games is at fourth place in the medals standings with one gold, five silvers and five bronze medals.
Host Vietnam remains on top of the medal tally with 10 golds, seven silvers and 10 bronze medals followed by Malaysia (9-3-6 gold-silver-bronze) and Indonesia (3-4-0)./PN
