MANILA – The Philippine delegation claimed two more gold medals, from basketball girls and swimming, to finish in sixth place in the 2017 ASEAN School Games that ended Wednesday night in Singapore.
It had 13 gold, eight silver and 21 bronze medals total, behind Thailand (29-26-32), Indonesia (25-33-29), Singapore (24-27-27), Malaysia (22-16-34), and Vietnam (20-21-10).
The national basketball girls team, led by Negrenses Kentjane Pastrana and Princess Fabruada, captured the championship after completing elimination round sweeps against Malaysia, Thailand and Indonesia.
Other members of the team were Jeeuel Bartolo, Melody Cac, Mary Lynn Estacio, Caila Mariz Galamiton, Alyssa Gonzales, Stephanie Villapando, Christine Cayabyab, Gypsy Canuto, Patricia Mendoza, and Karl Ann Pingol.
Swimmer Maurice Sacho Ilustre, meanwhile, bagged his fourth gold medal after topping the 200m butterfly boys with 2:03.57. Finishing behind him were Rhys Jun Kai Ng of Singapore (2:05.58) and Zelmi Arylingga Azel of Indonesia (2:06.01).
Ilustre earlier won gold in 100m freestyle, 200m freestyle and 100m butterfly. He also won silver in 400m freestyle and 50m butterfly.
Finishing with silver medals are swimmer Bhay Newberry in 50m backstroke girls and the basketball boys squad of Ilonggos Ryan Calama-an, Gerry Abadiano and Daniel Coo.
Bronze medalists on the final day of the annual competition are the boys and girls volleyball squads, boys and girls tennis teams, girls badminton team, and girls table tennis team./PN
