Phivolcs bats for template of quake-resistant houses

MANILA – Local governments and engineers should give the public templates of houses that can withstand earthquakes, state seismology office Phivolcs said after a string of deadly quakes destroyed thousands of structures in Mindanao.

The three October quakes had a combined death toll of 29 and damaged some 36,000 structures, according to a report by the national disaster council.

Structures that followed the Building Code should have withstood intensity 8 shaking, a notch higher than the intensity 7 shaking generated by last month’s quakes, noted Phivolcs Director Renato Solidum.

Many residents, however, cannot afford to pay engineers to ensure that their homes follow the Building code, he said.

(ABS-CBN News/PN)
