ILOILO City – Two armed men sprayed with bullets an “asset” of the Philippine National Police regional office’s Regional Intelligence Unit outside a cockpit in Barangay Poblacion, Leon, Iloilo.
The 54-year-old Joeven Campo of Barangay Buga, Leon died at the Aleosan District Hospital. He was a self-confessed drug user, according to Chief Inspector Cyril Octavio, Leon police chief.
Campo was about to board his tricycle when shot.
“He was certainly the target. He was with an uncle but the gunmen did not shoot the uncle,” said Octavio.
After shooting Campo around 3:30 p.m. on Saturday, the gunmen boarded a motorcycle waiting nearby and driven by another man, according to witnesses.
Responding policemen recovered from the crime scene nine empty bullet shells of a .45 pistol.
“From the descriptions that witnesses provided, we have come up with cartographic sketches of the two gunmen and their motorcycle driver,” said Octavio.
The gunmen did not bother to conceal their faces.
Aside from working for the Regional Intelligence Unit, Campo was also reportedly an “asset” of the National Bureau of Investigation. An NBI identification card was recovered from his wallet.
Leon police station investigators were not ruling out anything in their probe, said Octavio.
The killing could be related to cockfighting, illegal drugs or long-standing personal grudge.
Campo was not in Leon police station’s list of suspected drug pushers, said Octavio.
The victim made a surprise public confession of his drug use during an antidrug symposium in Leon, the police chief revealed.
Campo, however, made no attempt to voluntarily turn himself in to the Leon police station for profiling, said Octavio.
The killing was carried out a day after a tricycle driver, bearing signs he may have been summarily executed, was found dead in a secluded area of Barangay Buhang, Jaro, Iloilo City near the floodway.
The 30-year-old Joseph Bahandi of Bo. Cochero, Molo district had multiple gunshot wounds on the head and body. His eyes and mouth were wrapped in packing tape. His hands were bound with packing tape, too.
Jaro policemen recovered from Bahandi’s pocket 11 sachets of shabu.
As of this writing, no suspect had been identified./PN
