KALIBO, Aklan – Three Ilonggas were arrested for allegedly stealing the money and cellphone of a barangay official in Banga town.

One of them — 47-year-old Rose Evangelio of Molo, Iloilo City — had a standing warrant of arrest for theft charges, police said.

The charges were filed at the Municipal Circuit Trial Court here. The court issued the warrant on Sept. 21, 2010 yet.

Officers from the Kalibo and Banga police stations said they caught the women stealing the mobile phone and P2,000 cash of Barangay Poblacion kagawad Julinine Rago around 9:30 a.m. on May 22 in an ukay-ukay (used clothing) store at the Banga public market.

Police identified the two others arrested as Ann Magbutay, 43, and Nita Dimzon, 38, both of Dumangas, Iloilo.

All three suspects claimed they were victims of “tanim (planted) cellphone,” a term to mean the allegedly stolen items were placed in their possession without their consent.

The police officers were already looking for the suspects.

Police Officer 2 Danilo Dalida of the Banga police station said they and the Kalibo police station’s Intelligence Section led by Senior Police Officer 4 Reynaldo Macario were acting on a tip that the suspects might head to the Banga public market that day.

Dalida said the suspects pretended as customers of the ukay-ukay store and later casually walked away, taking the victim’s money and gadget.

“One of the suspects took the victim’s money and cellphone, passed them on to her cohort, who in turn placed the items in a bag,” Dalida said in the dialect. “We caught them in the act, so we followed and arrested them.”

Dalida said Rago thought her cellphone fell on the ground until she noticed a commotion nearby, where police officers were arresting the suspected thieves. (With Aklan Forum Journal/PN)
