ILOILO City – More than 22,000 Ilonggos filled churches across the city for the Easter Vigil Mass, with authorities highlighting not just the strong turnout — but the complete absence of any untoward incident, marking one of the most orderly Holy Week culminations in recent years.
Data from the Iloilo City Police Office (ICPO) showed that 22,036 individuals gathered in 21 churches on Black Saturday night, April 4, underscoring both the enduring faith of Ilonggos and the effectiveness of heightened security measures.
“The Easter Vigil Mass drew 22,036 individuals across 21 churches in Iloilo City,” said ICPO spokesperson Shella Mae Sangrines, noting that the turnout reflects the continued devotion of Ilonggos during Holy Week.
Despite the surge of devotees, authorities emphasized that the event remained peaceful and well-managed from start to finish — a result of early preparations and close coordination among police, church officials, and barangay personnel.
“There were no disturbances recorded despite the large number of people,” Sangrines said, commending both the discipline of the public and the preparedness of authorities.
Crowds began building up as early as 11 p.m., with both pedestrian and vehicular traffic swelling near churches, particularly during traditional outdoor blessing rites.
“There was a noticeable influx of people and vehicles in front of churches starting around 11 p.m. for the blessing rites,” she added.
Police personnel were strategically deployed at church entrances, nearby roads, and major intersections to ensure smooth traffic flow, maintain crowd control, and secure the safety of worshippers throughout the night.
The Easter Vigil — considered the most sacred liturgy in the Christian calendar — symbolizes the transition from darkness to light and celebrates the resurrection of Jesus Christ, drawing thousands annually to candle-lit rites and midnight Mass.
Authorities said the peaceful observance capped a week-long series of religious activities in Iloilo City, including processions and Visita Iglesia, and assured continued monitoring as Easter Sunday celebrations proceeded.
