ILOILO City – The Provincial Special Operations Group (PSOG) of the Iloilo Police Provincial Office (IPPO) raided the house of a gunrunning suspect in Barangay Sambag, Zarraga, Iloilo.

The suspect, Joel Bacanto, was not in his house but policemen recovered the following:

  • .45 pistol with magazine

  • two shotguns

  • .38 revolver

  • two hand grenades

Policemen also found a permit to carry firearm identification card with Bacanto’s name and 13 sachets of suspected shabu, said Senior Superintendent Marlon Tayaba, IPPO director.

The raid, led by Senior Inspector Robert Jason Pancha, was carried out around 6:05 p.m. on Monday. Judge Ma. Theresa Enriquez-Gaspar issued the search warrant.

As of this writing, Bacanto’s whereabouts were unknown.

Zarraga police chief Senior Inspector Roy Castro said Bacanto was not in their list of suspected drug personalities.

He described Bacanto as a trader engaged in poultry business.

The raid had a twist, though. An 19-year-old employee of Bacanto, Ronnie Villa, claimed the police took the P16,000 kept in his bag during the raid.

Villa also said the policemen fired guns at the start of the raid, scaring neighbors.

All persons in the Bacanto house were ordered to drop on the ground, added Villa, then the policemen started scouring the place.

Villa’s bag allegedly contained, aside from P16,000 cash, a Samsung cellular phone worth P5,000./PN
