Poll gun ban ends; 91 violators caught

ILOILO City – The barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan election gun ban has ended midnight last night.

Enforced on April 14, the gun ban resulted to the confiscation of 247 firearms across Western Visayas and the arrest of 91 violators, data from the Police Regional Office  6 (PRO-6) showed.

Policeman also seized 12 explosives and 33 bladed weapons.

The province of Negros Occidental had the most number of violators at 29, followed by Bacolod City (18) and Iloilo province (14).

The province of Capiz, on the other hand, had the most number of guns either confiscated or voluntarily surrendered (96) followed by Iloilo province (51) and Antique (27).

Most of the arrested gun ban violators were civilians, according to Chief Superintendent Cesar Hawthorne Binag, regional police director.

“Thankfully no member of the police or military was arrested,” he added.

The election period also ended midnight last night.

Binag said the PRO-6 achieved its goal – no major crimes during the election period (April 14 to May 21).

“We are thankful to the public and candidates for cooperating with us,” he said.

A total of 8,511 policemen were mobilized to keep the election clean, peaceful and orderly on May 14.
